Areas - Emerging Pathogens
The
1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act require EPA
to generate each 5 years, a list of contaminants that are
known or expected to occur in public water systems.
This list is known as the contaminant
candidate list (CCL). The first CCL was published
in 1998. The second CCl has 9 microbial contaminants,
and a determination whether to regulate any of these contaminants
should be made in 2006. Links to fact sheets about
these contaminants are available below.
SMI
is investigating novel new technologies for isolating and
analyzing emerging contaminants with the exception of Cyanobacteria.
EPA is primarily interested in the toxins released by Cyanobacteria
when the cell ruptures or dies. Detection of these
toxins requires highly sopisticated Liquid Chromatography
- Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS) instrumentation, which is not
available at SMI.
At
this time, SMI does not offer commercial testing for these
contaminants. Please check back for updates
to this page and for future developments / availability.
