Laboratory 4 has been partitioned into three sections for the following activities:  

(1) Cell culture operations, preparation of ultrapure reagents used for PCR, and other cleanroom procedures

(2) Environmental virology procedures and protein characterization studies

(3) Research administration

Isolation rooms and laminar flow biological safety cabinetry make it possible to prepare and maintain mammalian cell culture lines, produce sterile culture broths/buffers, and aliquot ultrapure reagents for the isolation and analysis of RNA and DNA.

The clean-room section of Lab 4 is equipped with a laminar flow cabinet with HEPA filtration, a Zeiss Invertoskop for examination of uninfected cell culture lines, multiple CO2 incubators and a laser particle counter for continuous monitoring of indoor air quality.  Activities that must be conducted in the absence of infectious microbials are performed in this room, with refrigerator and freezer space dedicated exclusively towards storage of noninfectious materials.
