Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule
The Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2 ESWTR) currently requires public water supplies that use surface water or groundwater under the direct influence of surface water and who serve >10,000 people to monitor for Cryptosporidium at least monthly for a 2 year period.
At the completion of the 24 sample monitoring period, EPA will categorize systems into risk "bins" based on the concentration of Cryptosporidium detected in their source water. Any bin classification other than bin 1 will result in the need to implement additional watershed control measures and/or advanced treatment technologies, which are described in the Microbial Toolbox. A description of the bin classification system is presented below. For more information on the LT2 Rule, follow the link to the EPA LT2 web site.
Compliance assistance
Scientific Methods Inc. was one of the first laboratories approved by the EPA for the analysis of Cryptosporidium by method 1623 for the LT2 ESWTR. Since that time we have been very active assisting public water supplies in understanding and complying with the intricacies of the rule. We would like to be your LT2 resource; providing help with navigating the details promulgated in the Federal Register, as well as supplying the top quality analytical support that has become known from Scientific Methods.
Monitoring for the LT2 regulation began in late 2006 with the systems that supply the over 100K populations (schedule 1 systems). Less than a year later the 50K-100K population supplies (schedule 2 systems) began monitoring, followed by the 10K-50K population water supplies (schedule 3 systems) in April 2008. SMI has been there from the beginning, partnering with our public water supply customers to provide quality analytical services and helping to assure compliance.
As the first round of monitoring for the EPA LT2 rule begins to wind down, we would like to continue offering these partnerships with the schedule 4 systems (under 10K populations that are over the E. coli trigger).
